Family requests memorial mural for Thomas Mayer; commission to explore DDA coordination

During public comment the commission received a request for a mural to memorialize Thomas Mayer, who the speaker said passed away last year. Commissioners discussed possible ways to connect the family’s request to a nearby DDA-funded project on the William/4th parking structure and whether the DDA’s mural program could incorporate a memorial nod.
“Thank you, Kathy, for bringing this to our attention,” Mary Theophils said, and commissioners agreed that staff and commissioners could act as liaisons to help the family explore options. Staff reported initial DDA feedback suggested limited appetite to alter the DDA’s current designs but offered to continue outreach and to report back with feasibility and contact information.
Next steps: staff (Chris) will continue conversations with the DDA and, if commissioners wish, Mary and others will assist in connecting the family with appropriate DDA or Neutral Zone contacts.
