At the Aug. 4 meeting of the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission commissioners discussed a public proposal — attributed to Aaron Hall in the comment — to transform the city's temporary ‘throne’ units with murals or decorative wraps. Commissioners noted similar wrap projects on electrical boxes and asked staff to check whether the throne units are listed in the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
“It's still a pilot program,” staff liaison Chris said when summarizing the response from the program team. Commissioners pressed staff to confirm the pilot timeframe, whether additional units are planned, and whether the city could direct existing maintenance or vendor payments toward decorative wraps.
Commissioner Allison noted the city already places designs on some units and suggested that, if the pilot becomes permanent, wrapping could be done similar to electrical-box projects. Mary Theophils, who drafted the annual report the commission is preparing, volunteered to help liaise between the family who requested a memorial work and the DDA if additional coordination would be useful.
Next steps: staff will follow up with the program owner and Kayla Coleman (to confirm CIP status), report back during the next staff update, and note whether the pilot or a future maintenance cycle would create a feasible window for wraps.
