County approves $1 million REET II contribution for Ellensburg Fieldhouse

Kittitas County commissioners on June 18 approved an Interlocal Agreement to allocate $1,000,000 from REET II funds to the City of Ellensburg to support construction and financing for the proposed Ellensburg Fieldhouse.
Zack DeHaven presented the Interlocal Agreement and said the contribution would be distributed as needed throughout the project and “would come from available REET II funds without impacting the County General Fund.” Commissioner Laura Osiadacz moved to approve the agreement; Chairman Cory Wright seconded and the motion passed.
A public comment submitted by email from Pat Kelleher opposed the county contribution, arguing the Fieldhouse “was never identified in the 2026 Budget as a funding priority” and warning county funding could make the county party to a lease arrangement and ongoing subsidies. Kelleher suggested the county instead fund broadly used recreation assets, offering an example annual contribution range of $300,000–$500,000 for the Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool.
The board’s approval does not include a recorded roll-call tally in the minutes beyond noting the motion passed. Staff characterized the payment as coming from REET II and said it would not draw on the unrestricted General Fund balance.
