UN: Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC is killing children and disrupting maternal care

The United Nations briefing relayed that an Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is disproportionately affecting children and women. The spokesperson reported that, according to UNICEF, more than 300 children have died since the outbreak began and that children account for a higher share of deaths than of confirmed cases.
UN agencies and partners have deployed around 13,000 community workers and carried out over 500,000 household visits to counter misinformation and encourage early care seeking. The World Health Organization’s technical advisory group on vaccine research recommended a clinical trial in the DRC of the licensed Ebola vaccine; WHO is working with partners to begin that trial as soon as possible, the briefing said.
