Road Commissioner prepares for culvert grant as weight limits lift April 4; seawall inspections and drainage concerns discussed

Road business dominated a portion of the April 2 meeting. The Road Commissioner reported that seasonal weight limits on Isle La Motte roads will be lifted on April 4, 2025, and that VTRANS has indicated a large culvert grant will be available this year. The Selectboard gave the commissioner support to solicit cost analyses so the town can be ready when the grant application opens.
Commissioner Robin also noted cracking observed in sections of the town 'seawall' and recommended an annual inspection program; the board asked staff to obtain a quote for the cost of an annual inspection as preventive maintenance. She raised concerns about a proposed driveway on West Shore Road and potential impacts to a nearby neighbor and water runoff; board members requested further study and contact with the north-side neighbor. The board also authorized the purchase of orange road cones up to $250 to thank the Town of Alburgh for lending steel plates for a failed culvert.
Other maintenance items discussed included seeking a crack-sealing quote from NICOM for a designated road segment, pursuing brush and tree cutting along the West Shore seawall (contractor contacts to be made), and updating town Right of Way rules and policies.
