Selectboard hears SHKS evaluation that Old Town Hall needs major structural work; town office deemed usable

Contracted architects and engineers (SHKS) told the Isle La Motte Selectboard the Old Town Hall has a poor foundation that would require lifting the building for a new foundation and additional upgrades; the Town Office/Elementary School was reported in generally good condition and will receive slides and a written report for public distribution.
The Isle La Motte Selectboard on April 2 received an evaluation from NRPC-contracted architects and engineers (SHKS) that flagged substantial structural problems at the Old Town Hall. SHKS representatives told the board the building’s foundation is in poor condition and “work to lift the Hall for a new foundation would be required,” and that structural, plumbing and electrical work are needed to bring the building into compliance.
Tony Menard and Nelson Martelle, representing SHKS, said the length of time the Old Town Hall has been vacant is a further trigger for compliance work and that the town will be provided with slides and a written report to share with residents. By contrast, SHKS described the Town Office/Elementary School as “in good shape for meetings, gatherings, and activities,” while noting options to repurpose the east side of that building will be reviewed further.
The board did not make immediate decisions about repairs or funding at the meeting; members discussed next steps and asked for the written SHKS report to guide future planning. The Selectboard indicated the report will be posted and shared with residents once received.
