Council accepts Plaza Park historic landscape survey, citing guidance for future projects

The Sonoma City Council voted unanimously Aug. 5 to accept the Plaza Park historic landscape survey and to find the acceptance exempt from further CEQA review. Jennifer Gates, the city’s community development director, told the council the document identifies “the historic elements of our plaza” and will be used to determine which features contribute to the park’s historic character.
Gates said the survey, prepared by Architectural Resources Group and reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission, documents built and landscape features and assesses their integrity. “So what is a historic landscape survey? … It identifies, and documents all the historic elements of our plaza,” Gates said. She added the survey will be a roadmap for deciding when to replant or retain existing design elements as projects come forward.
Council members praised the survey as a planning tool. The resolution was moved, seconded, and approved by roll call. The council will use the survey to advise decisions on maintenance, replanting and future projects affecting the 8.5‑acre plaza.
