The Heartland Community Schools Board voted to adopt Policy 801.14 (Student Self-Transport For Cooperative Participants) at its Sept. 8 meeting. The policy allows students in grades 7'12 who participate in cooperatively sponsored activities to self-transport to and from designated dual locations provided a parent or legal guardian files written consent with the principal; parental consent is valid for an annual term of Aug. 1 through May 31 unless revoked in writing.
The adopted policy defines self-transport methods, requires district-provided consent forms, and includes a hold-harmless clause in which parents and students agree to waive claims against the district for injuries or loss arising from self-transport. Administrative revocation is authorized: a first revocation remains in effect for the remainder of the annual term; a second revocation is permanent for the student. The board approved the policy by motion (mover: Jeb Mierau; second: Ryan Goertzen) with recorded Yeas from all members present.
