Ulster County committee signs off on FTA application to buy electric buses and chargers

The Ulster County Housing & Transportation Committee voted on Aug. 6 to approve a package of resolutions that authorize applying for and accepting Federal Transit Administration (FTA) 5307 funds to support Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT).
Director Doyle told the committee the suite of resolutions covers roughly $7.6 million in federal funds, about $902,000 in state funds and roughly $1.2 million in county funds — a total near $9.8 million — with the bulk budgeted for electric buses, chargers and solar. "The EV buses will take up the the the bulk of the funding," Doyle said, adding that new electric buses can run more than $1,000,000 apiece.
Committee discussion covered the FTA matching rules (different matches for operating assistance versus capital) and UCAT’s current electrification progress: staff said about 32% of the fleet is electric today — 15 of 47 vehicles. Legislators moved to combine related resolutions into a single block vote to expedite committee action; the committee voted to adopt the block.
