Opponents, including several speakers from the audience, argued the change could limit timely information that helps the commission make informed votes; public speaker Sarah Compton urged the commission not to restrict opportunities for public input before votes.
The commission’s final language leaves space for commissioners to ask questions of staff during discussion and for the mayor to recognize individual commissioners who wish to pose follow‑ups during public comment if the presiding officer allows it. The measure passed on a roll call vote. City staff said they would incorporate suggested clarifications before publishing the updated rules and will continue to track whether the change affects meeting transparency.
