Board to inspect properties after owners report uninhabitable or distressed conditions
Summary
Several Polk County residents told the board their parcels have been vacant or in disrepair and do not warrant current assessments; the board scheduled at least one interior inspection.
Owners told the Polk County Board of Equalization that assessed values fail to reflect property conditions in multiple cases. Dennis Ditloff said two parcels tied to Arborville Land and Cattle contain houses not lived in for 10 years and should not have one acre valued as house site for each parcel. Glen Bower Jr. said a rural parcel’s home is currently uninhabitable and asked that the assessed value reflect that condition. Jeff Church told the board he purchased a parcel at auction in November 2025 for less than the current assessment and described missing or damaged heating, cooling, plumbing, foundation and electrical systems; the board scheduled an interior inspection of that property.
The board noted several property owners did not appear for scheduled hearings; in cases where owners did appear, the board recorded protests and noted follow-up actions such as inspections and further review at the July 21 session.
