Lake property owners tell Polk County board valuations are too high

Several Polk County lake property owners told the Board of Equalization on July 14 that recent assessment increases for leased and lakeside lots are excessive. David Want said his lake property’s assessed valuation is now similar to his home in Lincoln; Paula Timperly said she had made only maintenance to her Duncan Lakes house but that its assessed value had increased substantially. Teresa Glandt provided comparisons of four east-end Duncan Lakes properties using square footage to argue relative values.
Other lake-lot owners raised similar complaints. Ron Ernst said his East Creek East lot is long and narrow with no beach and should not be valued the same as other lake lots. Kathryn Schmidt questioned increases to the leasehold interest on her lot and provided Butler County comparables for leased lots. The public comments did not produce on-the-spot changes to assessments; the board recorded the protests and scheduled action on filed protests for July 21.
