Some commissioners urged more direct public engagement — including a public vote or school involvement — and suggested the commission display multiple renderings for community selection. Commissioner Perez also reached out to Southwest Airlines, which staff said had no objection to repainting.
A motion to proceed with replacement contingent on a public poll of rendered options failed after several commissioners voted no. Supporters said the new design reflects recent downtown revitalization; opponents argued the current mural honors Herb Kelleher and urged deference to longstanding civic relationships. The commission did not approve a replacement at the Aug. 5 meeting.
