Superintendent outlines security project plan; board reviews recent active-shooter drill

Superintendent Brian Doelger told the board the administration has discussed a planned security project intended to strengthen building exterior elements, upgrade interior doors and install a universal lockdown system. Doelger said administrators are considering proposing the project in the coming budget, which could require a one-time breach of the tax cap to complete the work in summer 2025.
Doelger described a recent Suffolk County Department of Homeland Security active-shooter drill at the school. Board member Anthony Rando said the exercise involved fifty-six officers from East End jurisdictions and was designed to make off‑island first responders comfortable at the school and to identify building vulnerabilities. Doelger said the drill was valuable and emphasized that keeping intruders out of the building prevents most injuries; he told the board that, in his words, “99% of the times, no one gets hurt.”
