Preschool funding shortfalls could cut up to 10.5 classrooms, district staff warn

Nann Barnes, Preschool Associate Director, told the Board that Granite's preschool program faces funding reductions from grants and legislative sources and outlined four funding scenarios the district has modeled.
Barnes said Granite "has applied again this year for the HQSR grant (an amount of approximately $2M) and will not know the results of that application until April." She explained that opportunities to increase funding are limited and include registration fees, monthly tuition, limiting permits, and implementing scholarships and donations. The presentation included a chart showing four scenarios; depending on the strategy and without the grant, the district estimates losing between 2.5 and 10.5 preschool classrooms (SEG 028).
Board discussion focused on mitigation options and the district timeline for grant notification in April. Staff did not record a decision to change service levels during the meeting; the funding scenarios were presented for study and planning.
