Board hears early literacy plan emphasizing 'science of reading' and LETRS training

Amber Clayton, Associate Director of Literacy for Granite School District, presented the district's early literacy plan, describing the "science of reading" framework and steps the district is taking to align classroom practice with research.
Clayton said the district emphasizes phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing and is aligning a 120-minute reading block to research-based strategies. She told the Board that Granite has provided extensive LETRS training and that five coaches are trained to lead ongoing professional learning. Clayton referenced SB 127 and the state goal that "70% of Utah’s 3rd grade students will read on grade level by July 2027," noting the district's work toward that target (SEG 027).
Dr. Noelle Converse, who reviewed the broader curriculum adoption process earlier in the meeting, added that family and community engagement has been "extremely helpful" in getting learning materials to families as the district implements literacy supports (SEG 027).
