The Sherrill City Commission voted to appoint former comptroller Mike Holmes as interim civil service personnel officer following the unexpected death of the city’s personnel director. Staff said the appointment is an administrative, unpaid role to satisfy a statutory requirement while the city completes a one-year waiting period for a planned transition of civil service functions to Oneida County.
A city staff member told the commission that the county’s staff has been "phenomenal" during the transition and that, despite a prior belief a waiting period could be waived, the city must nonetheless make an interim appointment to comply with state law. "It's no pay. There's no no compensation, no cost to the city," the staff member said of Holmes's volunteer service. The commission moved, seconded and approved the appointment by roll call.
