Public works reports: rock salt deliveries tight; city proposes registry for tractor-mounted snow equipment

Public works staff told the commission the city has experienced rock salt delivery challenges, citing supplier and transportation issues, and that current inventory had been supplemented by recent loads but future deliveries remained uncertain.
"There was just an article in the newspaper that discussed how, Cargill, who is the supplier for the state and county through their procurement process, which we piggyback off of, is having a hard time getting deliveries," staff said. Staff said two loads arrived last week and two more might come this week, and encouraged patience as the supplier and logistics situation play out.
Staff also reported that tractor-mounted snowblowers used on city streets are technically non-registrable and non-insurable as motor vehicles. To address safety and liability concerns, staff proposed creating a local registry permitting such equipment to operate if owners present proof of appropriate insurance; that registry would be implemented for the next plowing season and staff will provide additional details later.
Commissioners and staff agreed that plowing streets and critical municipal routes takes priority during storms; staff invited residents to provide specific incident dates for follow-up on particular parking-lot plowing complaints.
