Board approves extra teaching periods, substitutes and extends home-instruction hours

At its Dec. 9 meeting the Board approved extra teaching periods for several staff, raised the caps on home-instruction hours for two instructors, and appointed substitute teachers and permanent substitute aides for the 2024–25 school year.
The Shelter Island Board approved a slate of personnel items in a single motion during the Dec. 9 regular meeting.
The motion authorized extra teaching periods for Maggie Manarel, Janine Mahoney, Jennifer Gulluscio and Debra Sears with specified bi‑weekly period counts and pay rates covering Nov. 18–Dec. 20, 2024. The Board also amended an earlier home-instruction motion to increase the maximum hours for Janine Mahoney and James Theinert from 45 hours to 82.5 hours at a rate of $75.10 per hour.
The Board approved additional staffing moves including the appointment of Mary Theinert as an additional substitute teacher at $125 per day, Stacey Kehl as a substitute nurse effective Dec. 5, 2024 at $125 per day, and the appointment of Jacqueline Selzer Clark and Cecilia Surerus as permanent substitute aides with retroactive start dates through June 27, 2025.
The personnel package also included an update to the district minimum wage in district payroll to $16.50 an hour effective Jan. 1, 2025 "pursuant to the modifications set forth in the FY 2024 New York State Budget Bill, modified Labor Law Section 652," text in the motion states. The motions passed with the board recording that the "motion carried unanimously." The minutes do not include a roll-call tally.
