Shelter Island board adopts 2024–25 districtwide school safety plan after public hearing

The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education unanimously approved the district’s 2024–25 District‑Wide School Safety/Continuity of Operations Plan at its Aug. 26 meeting following a publicly noticed hearing. President Kathleen Lynch opened the hearing at 6:01 p.m., and Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger presented the plan and invited community input.
Dr. Doelger told the board the plan fulfills New York State Education Department requirements and the SAVE Law and is intended to provide for the safety, health and security of students and staff. "The plan is required by NYSED and the SAVE Law and has been established to provide for the safety, health and security of students and staff and allows for input from the community," Doelger said. He also stated the district is "way ahead of the curve regarding safety." The board then voted in favor of a resolution to approve and adopt the plan; the motion carried unanimously. The district posted a copy of the plan on the district website and indicated it will follow the plan’s reporting and review steps as required by statute and regulation.
