Recreation director honored; new recreation coordinator introduced and fall sports planned

The Board recognized Jeff Smarr with a resolution thanking him for his role in building Smyth County’s recreation programs; Smarr said he will step back into retirement and expressed confidence in his successor, Andy Rhudy, who County Administrator Shawn Utt introduced at the July 9 meeting.
Rhudy and Smarr briefed the Board on fall sports: Smarr said football signups were "85% of football signups had been filled" and that games were scheduled to begin Aug. 15, 2026. Staff discussed pursuing grants to add field lighting and exploring adult coed leagues and interjurisdictional collaboration with town recreation programs.
