Plainville voters on Monday rejected the town board's request to raise property taxes above the limits of Proposition 2.5. "Monday's $1,950,000 request was defeated 933 votes to 591," a meeting participant announced after the tally, a margin of roughly 61.22% against to 38.78% in favor.
It was the second override loss for the town in fewer than 9.5 months; a $3,250,000 override failed in June by about 59% to 41%, according to the record. The board of selectmen must now return to the drawing board to produce a town-meeting budget that fits voter sentiment while addressing priorities such as public safety and education. "Our job starts new tonight for how we get to a budget that we can present at town meeting," a committee member said, urging immediate work on revised figures.
