The city council voted to adopt a comprehensive-plan amendment and approve rezoning to heavy commercial for an 82-acre site at 4955 East US Highway 377.
Cody Nolan explained the request to change the land-use designation and zone the property from interim holding to heavy commercial; the site spans across from existing auto dealerships and includes the new Nissan dealership. Bill Baird, an engineer representing the applicant Jerry Durant, said the owner has held the property for decades and that a major retailer was close to signing a deal for part of the site. Baird said the applicant has coordinated water and sewer extensions and site access planning in anticipation of a commercial center.
The planning and zoning commission recommended approval (6-0) and staff likewise recommended adoption. Council approved the comprehensive-plan amendment (ordinance 26-43) and the rezoning ordinance (26-44) with unanimous votes (6-0).
