Shelter Island School earns AP Platinum designation; school nurse to receive statewide award

Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger announced that Shelter Island School received AP Platinum designation (one of 7% of districts and the only public school in Suffolk County to earn it) and that Nurse Mary Kanarvogel will be honored as New York State Association of School Nurses 'Nurse of the Year' with a $500 scholarship to award to a graduating senior.
Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger told trustees that Shelter Island School was named an AP Platinum district — an honor awarded to just 7% of districts statewide — and the only public school in Suffolk County to receive that designation this year. He framed the recognition as evidence of the district’s academic program strength relative to regional peers.
Doelger also announced that Nurse Mary Kanarvogel will receive the New York State Association of School Nurses 'Nurse of the Year' award at the association conference in Albany on March 21–22, 2025; the award includes a $500 scholarship the nurse may present to a graduating senior pursuing nursing. President Kathleen Lynch publicly congratulated Nurse Kanarvogel during the meeting.
