Commission asks staff to study restrictions on vape and potential cannabis retail near daycares, churches and schools

During the May 28 meeting, Commissioner Steve Rollins voiced concern about the location of vape and smoke shops and their proximity to daycares, churches and schools, and asked whether the Commission could be prepared for future legalization of marijuana sales. "I—m concerned about the location of vape/smoke shops and their proximity to daycares, churches, schools," Rollins said.
Planning Director B. Leon Hughes said staff has conducted significant research and is prepared to present draft zoning language that would impose restrictions. Dr. Carol Horton asked whether existing businesses would be grandfathered; Mr. Hughes replied, "more than likely," indicating existing uses would probably be allowed to remain under current rules while future sales could be regulated through ordinance changes and special-exception requirements.
