Council tables funding for School Resource Officer training amid coverage and staffing concerns

Mayor Paul Eberline opened discussion about funding for a police officer to attend Basic School Resource Officer (SRO) Training scheduled Dec. 9–13, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas. Chief Natvig told the council that Grundy Center School officials requested 1–2 hours of daily SRO coverage and indicated they are willing to cover training costs in the next fiscal year.
Councilmember Kuester said that providing daily SRO coverage combined with extra services from Grundy County Memorial Hospital could remove an officer from regular street patrol for longer periods of time. Councilmember Smith echoed the concern and argued the city should not commit funds until a signed agreement with the school or hospital is in place. Smith moved and Mcdonald seconded to table Resolution 2024-71 (approval of funds for the SRO training); the motion to table carried on a 4–0 vote.
