Wheaton reviews America250 program proposals; mural could cost up to $60,000

City Manager Michael G. Dzugan reviewed proposed city-run programs and board/commission submissions to mark America250, saying the total cost would be $81,000 if all suggested programs move forward and that a mural alone could cost up to $60,000. "If all programs were approved, the total cost would be $81,000, with the mural potentially costing up to $60,000," Dzugan said.
Staff noted that American flags on street poles were infeasible because of pole height limitations but that flags could be explored in pavilions and tents used for events. The Forestry Division will plant a liberty tree at City Hall to mark the celebration; to accommodate the planting the existing tree, which staff estimated has a remaining life of six or seven years, will be removed. Council thanked the boards and commissions for the submissions and discussed encouraging neighborhood organizations to participate in parade activities.
No formal funding appropriation or final program approvals were recorded in the minutes; staff will return with recommendations if the Council wishes to proceed with the programs.
