Trustees question CSBA-recommended change that would remove opt-out for religious objections

During the policy study session trustees flagged a proposed edit to a bylaw on recognition of religious beliefs and customs (BP 6141.2). The redline would remove a clause that currently allows students, upon written parental request, to be excused from lessons conflicting with sincerely held religious beliefs and be offered alternative activities.
One trustee said removing the opt-out "effectively remove[s] my ability to say, hey... I will give you another assignment," and stated strong opposition to striking the accommodation language. Staff clarified the deletion was a recommendation from the California School Boards Association (CSBA) rather than a staff-originated change and agreed to provide the board with the CSBA rationale and any relevant legislative updates.
