Task force favors educational signage for headwaters rather than acquisition or trails

The task force discussed a headwaters/stream corridor identified in the Brandywine Creek Greenway strategic action plan and weighed acquisition, trail creation and educational approaches.
Staff explained the corridor spans private parcels and that while it was identified in the 2013 greenway plan, much of the land is not currently available for development or public access. The most feasible near-term approach, staff said, would be to prioritize educational signage and outreach and to pursue landowner agreements for any public access rather than large-scale acquisition.
Members agreed to move the related recommendation from the multimodal/transportation section to the natural resources/environmental section and to reword the matrix to prioritize signage and community education. Staff said specific language changes will be made to reflect negotiating with landowners and focusing on education rather than long-term land acquisition.
