District staff outline compensation priorities, send proposals to finance committee

Mitch, a district staff member, reviewed the existing teacher salary structure at a Mineral Point Unified School District board and staff collaboration meeting on Feb. 17, 2025, and said the central question is whether the "Distinguished" P6 rating should continue to trigger a double-step pay increase or be converted to a stipend tied to base salary.
Staff returned a set of suggestions to be examined by committees: compensation priorities generally to the finance committee; possible stipend mechanics for Distinguished ratings to a joint finance/personnel group; event worker pay and staff suggestions to the personnel committee; and retirement and benefits items to finance. The meeting record listed members present as Bergstrom, Busch, Dunn, Harris, Heisner, Johnston and Skelding, and School Board Clerk AAZ recorded adjournment.
The meeting included small-group work. Group 1 recommended following consumer price index (CPI) adjustments before step increases and suggested removing degree lanes for master's credits so teachers who complete a master's degree are not penalized if CPI adjustments do not occur. Group 2 questioned whether the Distinguished rating's purpose is to validate effectiveness or to adjust pay, and Group 3 raised support-staff concerns and historical substitute-pay changes.
Next steps: the board moved several items to the finance and personnel committees for analysis and specific proposal drafting; no formal motions or votes were recorded at this meeting.
