Teacher union and classified staff leaders criticize district priorities as administrator pay changes move forward
Summary

Union leaders used the Communications period to press the board over compensation priorities as administrators' contracts were on the agenda.
Esmeralda Fernandez, president of CSEA Chapter 745, summarized the chapter's summer work on bargaining, pending MOUs and a new bargaining agreement. She said classified staff remain engaged with district leaders and welcomed collaborative efforts.
Nico Vaccaro, president of the Natomas Teacher Association, told trustees the association was "disheartened" to learn the board and superintendent proposed raises to some high-level administrators that he said amount to "over 15% in increases" in the last two years while teachers were offered a 1.5% salary increase. "Our working conditions are students' learning conditions," he said, urging the board to prioritize recruitment and retention of classroom staff and supports for students.
Trustees and the superintendent responded that the contract amendments reflect title alignment and a move to a public salary schedule under AB 1997, with the superintendent describing the change as transparency rather than a pay increase policy.
