District reports improved immunization compliance and progress filling vacancies, but several special-education positions remain open

Orr said the broader Natomas community (including charters) is expected to serve between 17,000 and 18,000 students this year; the district projection made in February anticipated about 11,008 students, and staff reported 10,878 enrolled with 84 pending at the time of the update. He said immunization noncompliance had improved to about 288 students not yet compliant and previewed immunization clinics at the district's Aug. 2 back-to-school fair. On staffing, Orr reported 25 certificated vacancies overall but clarified: "we actually have 16 classroom positions right now that we are looking to hire" and the district has a plan to ensure every class is covered on day one, using TOSAs, substitutes and offers already extended where possible. He also listed specific openings (four special-education classroom positions still open and ten single-subject openings) and described facilities work across sites.
Trustees asked about contingency plans for fills and the superintendent and staff reiterated hiring is ongoing and staff will continue recruitment and provide coverage until vacancies are filled.
