Construction begins at Salem Street development; commission urges early landscaping input

Conservation staff reported a preconstruction visit at 154/158 Salem Street for a multi-unit development where erosion controls were installed and tree clearing had begun. Staff said the developer intends to proceed with initial earth-moving, utilities and grading work and that site controls were observed in place during the visit.

Commissioners expressed regret that the commission had not been involved earlier in landscape decisions and urged that, in future large projects, the commission provide early guidance on native plantings and landscape plans to reduce tree loss and improve the ecological outcome of the site. "Usually once the ZBA receives the application, it gets sent to other departments to provide comment letters," a commissioner noted; staff agreed to follow up with planning and zoning contacts to ensure the conservation commission receives materials earlier in the process.

Members also discussed the town composting pit and the use of screened compost versus fill, and asked staff to confirm operational details for invasive-plant management at the pit. No enforcement action was reported; the commission will continue to monitor the project during construction.
