District standardizes learner qualities and has specialists contribute ratings
Summary
The committee condensed learner qualities to five consistent dimensions across K–5 and will use the same 4–3–2–1 scale for those qualities; specialists will add ratings in their content areas rather than leaving learner qualities to homeroom teachers only.
Presenter (S2) described a trimmed set of learner qualities — interpersonal skills, responsibility, perseverance, collaboration and initiative — and said the committee created grade-level descriptions so the same behavior looks consistent from kindergarten through fifth grade. "We created more consistent learner qualities and then what that looks like across the grade levels," the presenter said.
The presenters also said specialists will report learner qualities in the academic sections where applicable so a student’s performance in specials (for example, music or physical education) will be reflected rather than omitted. The same 4–3–2–1 rating scale will apply to both academics and learner qualities to provide consistent messaging to families and teachers.
