St. Mary's County presenters outline overhaul of elementary standards-based report card

Presenter (S1) opened the meeting saying the district convened a 40-member committee to update the elementary standards-based report card after MSDE revised ELA, math and social studies standards. "We are here to provide you updates on the elementary standards based report card for the 2627 school year," the presenter said, explaining the committee included teachers, administrators, directors and supervisors from all elementary schools and met monthly to align report card statements with the state changes.

The committee’s work, presenters said, focused on making the report card clearer for parents and more useful as a data tool for teachers. The district plans to publish grade-level criteria documents on the SMCPS website and to reconvene the committee quarterly to collect surveys from teachers, administrators and parents and adjust language or expectations as needed. "We want to hear from everyone how's it going," the presenter said, noting the goal is to make student progress easier for families to understand and to reduce redundant teacher work.
