Council moves to draft parks-and-trails plan ahead of Feb. 2026 grant deadline

Pat updated the council on county-level talks to update parks and trails with partners; the council aims to complete a community-specific parks and trails plan before a Feb. 2026 grant deadline even as the county's full comprehensive-plan rewrite is expected to take two years.
Pat reported that on July 24 the Board of County Commissioners met with local councils, planning staff, public health, public works and economic development to discuss updating parks and trails plans. "They're on board with them doing that — it’s a giant amount of work, trying to get it done before Feb 2026 for the grant application funding deadline," Pat said, urging the council to recruit volunteers and local input for the parks-and-trails plan.
Council members discussed outreach to neighboring communities (Wishram and Dallesport) and involvement from Glenwood and High Prairie. The county indicated the full comprehensive-plan rewrite will likely take about two years and may not include sub-area plans by the end of that process; the parks-and-trails plan can be more specific to local communities and will be a priority for the council and planning staff.
