HRSA webinar outlines Ventilated Patient Form to standardize OPO reporting

Brianna Dobie, deputy director in the Division of Transplantation at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), opened the webinar and said HRSA is ‘‘thrilled’’ to bring stakeholders together to discuss implementation of the Ventilated Patient Form (VPF).
Stephanie Grosser, senior advisor at HRSA, said the VPF ‘‘establishes a simple, consistent reporting criterion based on whether a patient was both ventilated during their terminal hospitalization and has a documented pronouncement of death.’’ She and other presenters said that having this uniform data will help OPOs, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) and HRSA identify where patients exit the donation process and compare outcomes across OPOs.
Speakers emphasized that the VPF was developed through public comment and OPTN workgroups, and that HRSA and OPTN iteratively tested definitions with OPOs to limit reporting burden. HRSA plans to post the webinar slides, a recording and a guidance document (including FAQs) to a new VPF website for ongoing reference.
The session framed the VPF as an API-first initiative that aims to reduce duplicate data entry, improve consistency and protect data security while minimizing OPO burden.
