Commission explores pilot to accept reusable building materials at transfer station

A board member from the Reconstruction Center asked whether the transfer station could host an on-site trailer where contractors and residents could deposit reusable building materials that the center would later pick up. Kim said she liked the idea but stressed it would need operational controls to avoid turning into an unsupervised drop site.
Kim described Mansfield's model where contractors send a photo of a material for approval, the transfer-station attendant accepts or rejects it, the material is placed in the trailer and the Reconstruction Center picks it up when full. Kim said the model works but requires staff monitoring and diligence and that she needs Public Works director approval to proceed.
Commissioners agreed the approach could divert usable material from the bulky-waste pile but noted staffing and monitoring are necessary to keep the site organized.
