Council hears proposal for $138,000 River Road slope repair

Interim Director of Public Works Howard Weisberg told the Middletown Common Council that a significant slope failure just south of the city’s clean energy plant damaged an area that carries two high‑pressure gas mains, power and telecommunications infrastructure and sits below a rail line.
“We are looking for a project for the River Road Slope Repair,” Weisberg said, asking the council to authorize $138,000 from the Local Capital Improvement Program (LOSIP) to pay Geostabilization Inc. for site‑specific contractor work. He described the corridor as “a very critical area” because of the utilities and proximity to Amtrak and the clean energy facility.
Weisberg said the requested $138,000 is one piece of a larger remediation package; additional authorizations will be needed to complete paving and other follow‑on work in the same corridor. Councilmembers asked clarifying questions about scope and funding sources, and staff said more detail would be provided before final approvals are scheduled.
The workshop recessed at 6:44 p.m. and the council said it would resume the regular meeting at 7:00 p.m., when formal votes on agenda items are expected.
