Supervisors, school leaders split on Madison expansion versus a new elementary school

School staff summarized recent facility studies and proposed options including a Madison expansion, a new elementary school, targeted additions at Bowling Green, and a bus garage. School leaders said Madison scored well under the state rubric and that the division believed it could be competitive for construction grant money. "We are in the seventies [on the rubric], and that's without a letter of commitment," a school official said, describing the submission that could yield roughly $10 million in construction funds.
Supervisors pressed whether adding capacity at Bowling Green or Lewis and Clark would best improve outcomes and asked for cost comparisons and operational implications. One supervisor argued facility upgrades at Bowling Green remain a high local priority given community use and academic concerns; school staff warned that simply adding seats does not automatically move academic performance metrics. The school and county boards agreed to form a small joint committee to review design options, cost estimates and staffing implications before returning to the full boards.
The school staff advised patience while grant decisions and the county audit are finalized; they said a grant award or clarified revenue picture could materially change which option is feasible. The boards agreed to reconvene with detailed cost and operational models and recommended pulling facility‑study data for Madison and the new‑build cost estimates ahead of the next joint meeting.
