Jackson County approves utility permits, accepts TSIP lighting and portable signal trailers

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 5 approved two Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative right-of-way permits — one for an underground primary electrical directional bore under Bernard Road to serve a cattle building and a second for an overhead crossing on 370th Street — after county engineering staff said they had no objections.
"We see no issues on our end, so we recommend approval," Jayden of the county engineer's office said during the meeting. After motions and seconds, the board voted to carry both permits.
The board also accepted final project completion for the FY25 destination lighting project. County staff said poles and wiring were installed at five intersections, punch-list items were completed and the lights were tested at night; final acceptance is required to submit the reimbursement request to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Separately, the supervisors accepted the county's FY26 Transportation Safety Improvement Program (TSIP) award for portable traffic signal trailers. Jayden told the board the trailers have been received, tested in coordination with Cedar and Jones counties, and will be used primarily for summer highway patching. He said the DOT will reimburse up to $50,000 and the remainder of costs will be split among the three counties.
Board members discussed logistics for intercounty sharing of the trailers and how to schedule seasonal use, but no formal sharing agreement was adopted at the meeting.
