Insurers urge clearer outreach on coverage and penalties for utility strikes

An insurance perspective at the workshop stressed that homeowners and contractors often underestimate insurance implications from utility strikes and that outreach should clarify what coverages apply. "The 1 thing that, I think would really help is to make sure people understand the insurance coverages and the impacts if they don't have the coverages," said Jimmy Mansurant of Alliant Insurance Services.
He recommended materials that explain general liability, pollution exclusions and when a utility strike might affect coverage, and asked whether the board can assemble data on penalties levied against contractors or homeowners to reinforce messages. Board staff said the board does not currently compile penalty data but is interested in any supporting evidence that stakeholders can share for messaging.
