Board unveils compact field guide to simplify safe excavation in the field

The California Underground Safety Board introduced a compact field guide meant to make excavation safety steps easier to use in the field, presenters said during the workshop. "So, recently, we published a a field guide," one participant told the group, explaining the new edition condenses law and best practices into five clear steps for on-the-ground crews.
The guide was created after feedback that the previous 120‑page manual was too dense for users who need quick answers on site. Participants said the new version is spiral-bound, pocket-sized, visually organized with color tabs, and available in both print and electronic formats so crews and supervisors can access the appropriate level of detail. "If they have an issue with the contract, they just kinda just I... I think I've given out almost 200 at this point," one field user said about demand for the new guides.
Board staff said the guide is already available on the board's website and that initial distribution and promo orders indicate strong demand from utilities and contractors. They recommended the board continue offering both physical copies for field crews and searchable online versions for supervisors and training programs.
