Council takes first step on new park rules for nicotine, pets and golf carts

The Grundy Center City Council opened a public hearing Dec. 2 on Ordinance 579, which would amend Chapter 47 (Park Regulations) to address use of nicotine, privately owned animals and driving golf carts in city parks. The hearing produced no public speakers, and council members moved the ordinance forward on first reading.
Councilmember Kuester asked Darrel Shuey for the Park Board Commission’s input; Shuey provided the commission’s perspective. City Clerk Kristy Sawyer told the council enforcement is structured to follow Chapter 4 (Municipal Infractions). After discussion the council voted to suspend the rules and proceed to a third reading at the next meeting.
