At a special Aug. 6 Methuen School Committee meeting, search consultant Jeff of Zeal walked trustees through a multi-stage plan: stakeholder engagement, a 15-page leadership profile, screening of an 8—to—10 candidate slate, semifinal interviews and 2—public finalists — with a target for a July 1 start and options to post in early 2027.

Jeff, the lead consultant from search firm Zeal, gave the Methuen School Committee a detailed orientation to the district's superintendent search, laying out the firm's process and the committee's upcoming choices. He said Zeal will use a client portal and a two-part engagement strategy — structured stakeholder interviews and an open ThoughtExchange — to create a leadership profile that will drive candidate screening and evaluation.
"This is an incredibly important project for your community and your schools, and we're really honored to be here and look forward to working together," Jeff said, introducing the firm's team and the client portal. He described a typical timeline: Zeal screens applicants and presents an 8 to 10-person slate to the committee, narrows that to 5— semifinalists for in-person evaluation, then recommends 2— finalists who would be interviewed in open session.
Committee members pressed the firm on how the process affects recruitment and fairness. Jeff warned that making finalists publicly declare early in the process can deter otherwise-qualified candidates: "If 3 people have to come and make a public declaration of their interest and only 1 gets the position, obviously 2 others have to go back to their communities," he said, asking the committee to be clear in advance about whether they want finalists handled in public or confidentially.
The committee and consultant also discussed contract timing. Zeal suggested reverse-engineering the schedule to meet a preferred start date; members referenced a possible July 1 appointment. The meeting closed with agreement to refine timing and engagement plans at a follow-up meeting.
