Joseph Arias of 622 Cherry Valley Drive asked the Amherst Zoning Board of Appeals on Aug. 5 for permission to install a 14-by-12 hardtop gazebo on his patio, saying the structure is intended "just to get the furniture out of the weather." Arias told the board the gazebo would sit on a stamped-concrete patio but be anchored to the ground at the sides "with long anchors" so the concrete is not penetrated.
The board and staff noted the property already contains other accessory structures; the building inspector explained that the presence of existing structures affects allowable accessory-structure sizing and that variances are required when combined structures exceed ordinance limits. The chair reminded Arias that the board would make its decision in deliberative session and that he would be notified in writing within 14 days.
