The council accepted a draft public electric vehicle charging plan on Feb. 2 after a VEIC presentation laying out priority zones, demand forecasts and ownership options. The plan projects South Burlington will need nearly 590 level‑2 public ports and roughly 70 DC fast‑charging ports by 2035 (the report’s mid‑scenario), and estimated additional capital costs of about $11.8 million to achieve that deployment, depending on siting and utility costs.
VEIC’s Dave Roberts explained the analytic approach: the city was divided into hexagonal cells and weighted by variables including multiunit housing, existing chargers and projected EV adoption; the advisory group prioritized convenience for residents without home charging and a concentration of level‑2 chargers near multiunit residential clusters. Roberts noted that commercial fast charging typically requires substantial subsidies or state funding to be feasible and that level‑2 charging can work for many multiunit residents if chargers are sited within walking distance. The council voted to accept the draft plan and requested staff pursue implementation steps and Phase 2 work focused on multiunit residential charging challenges.
