Shade Tree Commission narrows fall tree species list for community planting

The Shade Tree Commission on a regular meeting approved a provisional list of species to offer for its fall 2026 community tree planting, with members emphasizing climate resilience and site suitability. Chair (Speaker 1) said the group circulated a species table from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and discussed soil and siting constraints; the commission agreed to show the proposed list to Jeff for final review.
Committee members tentatively picked small trees including Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) and red buckeye; medium options such as black gum and Virginia or Jersey pine; and large trees including American sycamore, Overcup oak, and American persimmon. "We have to cut them... American sycamore, over oak, and American persimmon," a committee member summarized while the Chair noted that final choices will depend on vendor stock and arborist recommendations. Members also discussed messaging to increase uptake of larger, longer-lived species and the difficulty of convincing residents to choose oaks.
