Anchorage Health Department epidemiology staff told the Public Health and Safety Committee that measles virus was detected in four wastewater samples collected in Anchorage between July 7 and July 14, 2026, though the department has not recorded a confirmed community measles case in Anchorage in 2026.
The department emphasized that wastewater detection does not confirm community transmission or the number or residency status of infected people, but it can be an early warning. "A measles detection in wastewater can be an early warning sign," the health department presenter said, adding that other U.S. communities saw wastewater signals days or weeks before cases were identified. Officials noted that measles can hang in the air up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room and listed complications that include pneumonia and encephalitis.
Anchorage vaccination coverage was presented as well below the 95% herd-immunity target: one-dose coverage at 79% and two-dose coverage at about 76%. The presenter said MMR vaccine effectiveness is about 93% after one dose and 97% after two doses. Local prevention steps include partnering with the school district for vaccination outreach events (two held the prior week and at least three more planned), maintaining wastewater monitoring, and coordinating with the state on reporting and health alerts to providers.
The committee asked about test sensitivity and sampling limitations; the department cautioned that sewershed sampling excludes areas not served by municipal sewers (for example, Girdwood and Eagle River) and populations not contributing to sewers (e.g., diapered infants or people off the system). Officials said absence of detection does not guarantee absence of risk and recommended vigilance as travel can import cases.
