Committee schedules Sept. 7 open house before planning & zoning hearing; proposal for citywide mailer fails

The Department of Planning proposed holding an open house on Sept. 7, the day after Labor Day, and asked committee members to staff or attend. Staff said the department prefers that Planning & Zoning commissioners also be present so attendees can address the commissioners ahead of the statutory public hearing.
Committee members voted to hold the open house immediately before the Planning & Zoning meeting and make the public hearing seamless. A member proposed an amendment directing staff to send an informational mailer to every household; staff cautioned that an all‑household mailing would cost thousands of dollars and required an additional budget decision. The amendment failed for lack of a second and the original motion to schedule the open house and combine it with the public hearing passed. Joe said the department will promote the events, post materials to the city website and work with GIS to provide requested ZIP‑level breakdowns before the public events.
During the discussion staff estimated previous similar mailings had cost roughly $78,000 and said a $7,000–$8,000 low‑end estimate for a more concise mailer is plausible but would need city manager and budget approval.
